Occupying a peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Florida is largely miles of beautiful coastline. There is 1,350 miles of coastline, in fact, which makes it the longest coastline in the contiguous United States. This great state earns the majority of its revenue from agriculture, tourism and transport. The state is known for its oranges, amusement parks and the Kennedy Space Center. Historically, several Native American groups, namely the Timucua, the Ais, the Apalachee, the Caluse, the Tequesta and the Tocobaga, inhabited Florida. It was not until 1513 that Florida was discovered by Spaniard, Ponce de Leon and was dubbed, "La Pascua Florida" or "Flowery Festival". It officially became a state in 1845.
Florida has a number of metropolitan cities, namely Jacksonville, Tampa, Tallahassee, Miami, Coral Springs, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and St. Petersburg, which are largely responsible for its revenue. Tallahassee is the state's capital and its largest city is Jacksonville.
It is interesting to note that, although Democrats make up the majority of registered voters, residents have voted for Republican presidential candidates every election except for 1964, 1976, 1996 and 2008.
It is believed that two-third's of Florida's population was born in other states. This may account for the variety of languages spoken in the state, such as English, Creole, French, Arabic, Tagalog, Vietnamese and German.
Sixty million visitors come to the 'Sunshine State' each year to experience the warm weather and attractions offered in the area. Twenty-three million people come for the beaches alone. The most visited and largest vacation resort in the world, Walt Disney World Resort, is located near Orlando. It contains four theme parks, two water parks and twenty hotels. During peak season, visitors are treated to nightly fireworks displays. Busch Gardens is also a very popular destination, boasting 335 acres of African-themed attractions. Approximately four million people visit Busch Gardens at Tampa Bay each year.
A mere hour from the Disney resort lays the Kennedy Space Center. Most of the facility is restricted access, but that does not stop visitors from flocking to the location where every space launch since December of 1968 has occurred.
Because of its miles of coastline and proximity to Cuba and the Bahamas, boating is also a popular pastime. Many people opt to house their boats in the numerous marinas that dot the coastline.
Behind tourism, agriculture is the second largest income producer for the state. In fact, the state is the fourth largest exporter of trade goods. Florida is famous for its oranges and grows the majority of all the citrus fruit in the United States, including grapefruit and tangerines. In addition to growing strawberries, celery, sugarcane and tomatoes, the state produces more green beans and sweet corn than any other state in the U.S. Fishing is also a major Florida industry.
One million people visit the Everglades National Park each year. After Death Valley and Yellowstone National Park, it is the third largest national park in the lower 48 states. Many endangered species live in this park, including the American crocodile, the Florida panther and the West Indian manatee. It also hosts 50 species of reptiles, 40 species of mammals, 350 species of birds and 300 species of fish.
Although the Sunshine State did not have its own professional athletic team until the 1966 arrival of the Miami Dolphins football team, it welcomes two-thirds of all the Major League baseball teams for spring training each year. Presently, the state has two Major League baseball teams, the Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays. It also has two National Basketball Association teams, the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic, two National Football League teams, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins and two National Hockey League teams, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers.
